Family Foot Steps

Family Foot Steps

Susila is an Indian woman, born in Melbourne to an Indian father and English mother in 1970's. She was given a chance by ABC channel to be in her parent's homeland and discover more about her culture. Susila accepted the challenge because she wanted to find out what her life would have been if her father hadn't emigrated.

Susila packed her things with the help of her sister but she had to pack only 2 outfits and no make-up. Susila left Australia and when she arrived in New Delhi, she was shocked from the crowded area, the stench and the dirtiness, far cry from Ballarat the quiet place that she lived in.

She met Nandita, her host, who welcomed her in a traditional way and showed her the place. Susila had her own, she unpacked and tried the Sari on. Unfortunatley the Sari didn't fit her, so she went shopping with Nandita to buy a new one. After that they came back and talked about Nandita's life. She was a34 year old woman, happily married to a TV journalist and had a 6 year old daughter. Nandita was an astrologer who predicted things about arrenged marriages that dominated in India. The of arrenged marriages didn't scared susila because the girl always makes the final decision.

Suila met a famous Indian singer Laili who taught her a traditional hindu songs. The other day Susila suffered homesickness and heat exhaustion due to the high temperature. After she felt better, Susila attended a traditional wedding that she prepared to sing at. it was rainy and that supposed to bring luck for the bride and the groom. Susila sang at the wedding and she was very proud of her self.

With traditional farewell and blessing by Nandita, Susila left India and arrived in Australia safely. After the warm welcome she told her family that she was very proud to be an Indian woman but she knew she couldn't live there. She had plans to help her people in India.

She missed Australia very much but she missed her family even more because she realised that home wasn't a place. Home was to have people around who love you and care about you.

Spring Festival

Spring Festival is the most important festival for Chinese people. It is on the 1st day of the 1st lunar month and lasts for nearly 2 weeks.
Spring Festival is held when all family members get together. On the 8th day many families make "Laba" porridge, a delicious kind of porridge made with rice.

The 23th day is called PreliminaryEve. At this time people offer sacrifice to the kitchen god. After that every one is busy for the coming New Year. They go to buy necessities for the New Year (flour, chicken, duck, fish and meat but also fruit, candies and nuts, decorations, new clothes, shoes, gifts for eldery, friends and relatives)

People post pictures of the god of doors and wealth on the front doors to ward off evil spirits and welcome peace. When waking up on the New Year day, every body dresses up. First people extend greetings to their parents, and then each child gets money as a New Year gift, wrapped up in red paper.

Fireworks are one of the most traditional customs during Spring Festival. People think the spluttering sound could help drive away evil spirits. However, such an activity was forbidden by the government. As a replacement, some break little ballons to get the sound, while others buy firecrackers handicrafts to hang in the living room.

A series of activities such as lion dancing, dragon lantern dancing are special events during the festival. Then the spring festival comes to an end when the lantern festival is finished and Chinese people look forward to the new Spring Festival next year.
